ITC BLOG POST

How to turn your dream into reality…

Hi there, My name is Charlotte Roberts-Swain. I graduated The International Travel College in December 2014.

I am writing this entry to not only talk about my experience as a student, but to also inspire Students and graduates to keep holding onto that dream, Make that dream a reality, never loose sight of your goals!

I write this blog as I sit on a flight from Indonesia to Singapore. And I am going to give you a little steep by steep insight to how I got to where I am today… I look back on the last few years, and without ITC behind me, I would have struggled to gain the experience that I now have behind me.

Lets take it back to 2013, my last year of high school. I had decided to leave school at the end of year 12, still not knowing 100% what I wanted to do with the next few years. I was looking around for courses and internships that I could do, and I wanted to do something productive since I was leaving high school early. My school held a careers evening, there I meet representatives from universities all over New Zealand, trying to suck me into their 4 year long degrees, that didn’t appeal to me at the time. As I kept walking I came across a man called ceri, yes we all know welsh ceri! He was there the night I decided to collect enrolment forms for ITC, My travel teacher at school sent me on a week long tasting course with Mel at ITC, Based in the City Campus. We went jet boating, Exploring Auckland and got to see behind the scenes of the Hilton Hotel in Auckland city, that is when I decided to sign those Enrolment forms.

2014 I entered ITC doors with a scholarship that I had gained for creating a travel blog about my past experience, by this time I hadn’t had to much experience, but I had grown up leading at a local kids camp, working at The Beach House Restaurant and travelling with family members around the globe, so I write about my experience in my blog, with everything collected together I was very proud of it. If you get the chance DEFIANTLY apply for the scholarship that ITC offers to its students.

My first day was scary! I didn’t know anyone. But by first break I was walking around botany with a group of girls, who today, 2 years later are my bestest friends. Throughout the year we had our ups and downs. Half of my class wasn’t doing to well for attendance, but with my group of friends we made a deal that we would try and make the year with no days off, because from the tutors you will hear a lot of “100% Attendance and you will have your dream job” – Cathy. We did just that. The Year was non-stop, but it gave me an insight to what the working world is like. You will grow up, you will find yourself, You will work hard, it will have its perks, by the end of the year you will wonder where the time went. You will go to graduation, dress up, Take photos, receive your certificates and have the time of your life, and then it will hit you, its time to join the real world…

...Once you gain your qualifications you will be set free from campus, you will feel like you are on your own, but you must never forget that ITC has still got your back, check up on posts in your campus page, as it of full of new job opportunities. Looking for the right job will take you a while, I would recommend getting a part time job in the mean time, it doesn’t matter where it is, but just to get you through. And for the rest of your time, get yourself out there, go and meet new people, make connections, keep working on your CV and remember that a job interview or a trial is something that you can benefit on yourself, as you can see if that is the place that you would like continue your life story.

You may have come into this course because you have a passion for travel, or you may have been looking for that one steep out the door from high school, what ever the reason may be, You have chosen the right path and the opportunities are endless.

There are many different paths in Travel and tourism. You have Adventure tourism, Resorts and Hotels, Airline, Ground Staff, Tour guiding, Attractions, The list goes on.

I recently spent 6 months in America, Florida on the Disney Collage Internship, and you will be able to read about it on my blog in a separate blog post, the post is called ‘An open letter to the Disney College Program’

But my dream job seemed to be a little different to everyone, today I am proud to say that I have achieved my dream and I find myself crewing all over the world on super yachts, charted and owned by the rich and famous. Today I have been sent to do some work in Singapore and tomorrow I will be on the other side of Indonesia sailing the boat and getting ready for an owners 3 week cruise around Indonesia. The thing that I like about travel and tourism is that every day is different and you will meet many different people on your journey.

ITC was the beginning of my story, the rest is for you to write yourself, so I urge you to get out there and send out those CVs and get talking to different people, because travel and tourism and studying at ITC will change your life and give you an exciting new adventure.

Keep up the good work and don’t let that dream slip away from you!

that dream slip will change your life and give you an exciting new adventure.

Keep up the good work and don’t let that dream slip away from you!
